Prof. Sonia Lucia Fiorilli graduated in Industrial Chemistry in 2000 at Università di Torino and took her PhD in Materials Science and Technology at Politecnico di Torino in 2005. She has been granted with research fellowships at the School of Chemistry of St. Andrews University and the Ecole Nationale Supérior de Chemie, Montpellier, France. She was visiting researcher at the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence, Department of Chemistry, University of York, UK, and a visiting professor at the University di Laval (Quebec), Canada. She is Full Professor of Fundamentals of Chemical Technology at the Department of Applied Science and Technology (DISAT) Politecnico di Torino. Currently, S. Fiorilli chairs the course of “Chemistry” and co-chairs the course of Organic Chemistry at Politecnico di Torino. As regards her scientific activity, she has consolidated expertise concerning the synthesis, characterization and functionalization of inorganic nanostructured materials and composites mainly for biomedical, environmental, and energy-related applications. More recently her research interests also concern the development of sustainable processes and formulations for 3D manufacturing (3D printing and electrospinning techniques) and novel recycling strategies for the recovery and re-use of critical/hazardous raw materials from complex products.

She has been and is currently involved in several international and national projects, as principal investigator, WP leader, task leader, and a component of the research units. Below is a selection of the research projects:

  • WP leader of REBORN “Remodelling of the infarcted heart: piezoelectric multifunctional patch enabling the sequential release of therapeutic factors” (HORIZON Europe, call HORIZON-CL4-2022-RESILIENCE-01)
  • Principal investigator and WP leader of BEST4Hy “SustainaBlE SoluTions FOR recycling of end of life
  • Hydrogen technologies” (H2020-JTI-FCH-2020-1), awarded as Best Success Story.
  • WP leader of GIOTTO “Active aGeIng and Osteoporosis: The next challenge for smarT nanobiOmaterials and 3D technologies” (EU-H2020- NMBP-22-2018)
  • Principal investigator and task leader of MOZART “MesopOrous matrices for localized pH-triggered release of therapeutic ions and drugs” H2020-NMP6-2015”
  • Coordinator of the project ZODIAC “Zwitterionic mesOstructureD glAsses: powerful deviCes for bone regeneration” funded by Compagnia di Sanpaolo
  • Coordinator of the project - Bio-derived silicas as catalysts for green processes – in the frame of the British-Italian Partnership, funded by the British Council

She has been recently selected to receive the 2024 Jubilee Global Diversity Award by the Engineering Ceramics Division of the American Ceramic Society. She is Associate Editor of the journal Sustainable Materials and Technologies. She has authored 117 papers including research articles and book chapters (H-index 35 and about 3350 citations) mainly in the field of biomaterials, antibacterial surfaces, surface functionalization, bio-fabrication and tissue engineering.
