Hydrogen is more and more likely to contribute to the decarbonization of EU economy and society. As demand for hydrogen technology increases, ever more devices become in use and will eventually end up in the waste stream, requiring therefore to be handled in a sustainable manner.

BEST4Hy focuses on the development and validation of existing and novel recycling processes for two key fuel cell and hydrogen products: proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) and solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC).

In the framework of BEST4Hy, IRIS research group, in collaboration with Energy and Environment, Land and Infrastructure Engineering Departments, is in charge of the development and optimization of a recycling technology for anodic components (Ni and YSZ) recovery from cells dismantled from stacks and from manufacturing scrap. Ambitious targets for recycled content in new cells have been set and will be validated by the cell producer.
